Maintaining Your Garden

Whether you are a novice or a pro, growing your own fruits and vegetables can be incredibly enjoyable and rewarding. Tending to a garden can improve your mental and physical health, which is vital now more than ever as people are spending more time at home.

At this point you have probably already prepared the area and put your plants in the ground, but if you have not yet, we can help!

Although nature can be unpredictable, maintaining a bountiful garden is easier said than done!  Here are a few ways that you can control how well the fruits of your labor do:

  1. Watering

Your garden can have perfect soil and ideal sunlight, however without proper watering all that hard work is for naught.

Too much watering and lack of drainage can cause rot and pest infestation and too little water will stunt growth and may result in fruitless plants. Ideally, your garden should be placed near your water source with the best times to water being in the morning and again in the evening.

If you are concerned about having the time to keep up with watering there are many alternatives, such as drip irrigation or a sprinkler system to help keep your plants hydrated.

  1. Pest Control

It is inevitable that pests and animals will try to make their way into your garden.  Although chemical pest deterrents are available, there are a few natural ways to protect your plants as well.

Fencing is the best way to keep larger animals, like deer and rabbits, away from your veggies.

You may also want to consider adding plants that keep bugs away, such as Marigolds, Chrysanthemums or Lavender, to your garden.  This is both an aesthetically appealing and cost-effective pest control solution.

Another option is making a DIY Pest Control Spray made from these types of plants https://www.farmersalmanac.com/diy-pest-control-34623 .

Proper watering comes up again here, as over watering leads to rot, which unavoidably will result in a pest infestation.

  1. Weeding

There are many reasons why weeding is key to a successful garden. Most importantly weeds take away vital nutrients from your plants, which can lead to a lackluster harvest. Gardens overgrown with weeds are also prone to pest and drainage issues.

To prevent weed growth be sure to aim directly at your plants when watering and weed well around you garden. It is best to weed when the ground is damp, as you will be able to remove more of the root.

  1. Timely Harvest

The most rewarding part of gardening is enjoying the fruits of your labor. It is important to pick all ripe vegetables when they are ready, even if you do not plan to eat them right away.

Leaving ripe vegetables in your garden to rot can result in disease and pest infestation. If you have an abundance of extra veggies consider canning, freezing, or gifting them to your neighbors!

We hope these tips help you make the most of your garden this season. As always, should you need any help or advice on your garden or landscape, our team is happy to help!
